Biopsy Proven Tumefactive Multiple Sclerosis with Concomitant Glioma: Case Report and Review of the Literature

چکیده
We report a case of pathologically confirmed tumefactive multiple sclerosis (MS) followed shortly thereafter by the diagnosis of an oligoastrocytoma. The complexity of diagnosis and management of concomitant presence of tumefactive MS and glial cell tumors is discussed.

Tumefactive: A Rare First presentation of Multiple Sclerosis
Tumefactive demyelinating lesions are a rare presentation of multiple sclerosis (MS). Diagnosis of tumefactive is commonly carried out using magnetic resonance image (MRI). Tumefactive diagnosis is difficult because of may similar to the clinical and MRI characteristics of glioma or a cerebral abscess. We presented a 35-years-old female with one episode of secondary generalized seizure after de...
متن کاملNeuroimaging of tumefactive multiple sclerosis with atypical features
Tumefactive demyelinating lesions or tumefactive multiple sclerosis (TMS) constitute a unique presentation of demyelinating disease that frequently mimics intracranial neoplasm, infection or other, nondemyelinating intracranial pathology. Consequently, these lesions, which are larger than typical multiple sclerosis plaques and are generally characterized by certain MRI features including edema ...
متن کاملA rare presentation of atypical demyelination: tumefactive multiple sclerosis causing Gerstmann’s syndrome
BACKGROUND Tumefactive demyelinating lesions are a rare manifestation of multiple sclerosis (MS). Differential diagnosis of such space occupying lesions may not be straightforward and sometimes necessitate brain biopsy. Impaired cognition is the second most common clinical manifestation of tumefactive MS; however complex cognitive syndromes are unusual. CASE PRESENTATION We report the case of...
متن کاملTumefactive demyelinating lesions: Characteristics of individual lesions, individual patients, or a unique disease entity?
Whether or not recurrent tumefactive demyelinating lesions are a unique form of CNS demyelinating disease or part of the continuum of multiple sclerosis is a question raised by the case report on which this commentary is based. Detailed review and immunopathologic study of biopsy material may not only confirm or refute a diagnosis of demyelinating disease, but potentially uncover unique feature...
متن کاملDifferentiation of Tumefactive Demyelinating Lesions from Metastatic Brain Disease with FDG PET-CT: A Case Report
Tumefactive demyelinating brain disease can pose a diagnostic challenge in patients without a pre-existing diagnosis of multiple sclerosis by mimicking intra-cranial neoplasms, infarction, as well as infections. Choosing when to biopsy a tumefactive lesion to exclude alternative pathology can be difficult. Here we report a case of a 44 year old female patient without a previous history of multi...
